School Enrollment Down in Most Counties

The state Department of Education says enrollment in the state’s public schools dropped by nearly 2,760 students this year. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the decrease is more than double the declines in the past two years. Only nine of the 55 counties saw increases in overall enrollment. Berkeley and Monongalia saw the biggest gains, while Kanawha and Cabell counties, home to West Virginia’s two largest cities, saw the biggest drops. Counties with fewer students will receive less money from the state next year.
