Program Makes Use of Refurbished Computers

West Virginia officials are putting more surplus computers to good use while saving the state money. The state Department of Education says 20 refurbished computers, five notebooks and four laser printers are being donated to Chesapeake Elementary School in Kanawha County. Under the Second Launch WV program, state government computers taken out of circulation have been fixed up, cleared of old data and sent to schools, daycare centers and other places. Officials say had these surplus items been purchased as new, the estimated cost would be more than $2 million. Other places that have benefited from the program include the Marshall University Forensic Science Graduate Program, the state departments of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, public defenders, and the Kanawha County health department.
