Kanawha Prosecutor
A Kanawha County prosecutor says a magistrate’s assistant has admitted to stealing money from the office. Kanawha Prosecuting Attorney Charles Miller tells the Charleston Gazette-Mail Doris Aliff resigned from her job as an assistant about two weeks ago after paying back the $1,150 she took. The money was reported missing in April and Kanawha sheriff’s deputies attempted to talk to Aliff. She left after the deputies asked her to take a polygraph exam, and hasn’t returned to work since. Aliff went to deputies earlier this month and started cooperating with the investigation. Miller says prosecutors decided not to charge Aliff after considering her “mental status” at the time she took the money. Instead, Aliff agreed to a pre-trial diversion program, which requires her to stay out of trouble for a year.
