State Superintendent Announces Resignation
West Virginia Schools Superintendent Michael Martirano says he will resign his position on June 30 to move closer to his family in Maryland. The state Department of Education made the announcement Tuesday. Martirano says he has been faced with personal family matters outside of his control in the most challenging year of his adult life. Martirano’s wife died after a prolonged illness. His resignation letter says he now finds himself both a dad and a mom to his three children living in Maryland. Martirano was named the state’s 30th schools superintendent in September 2014. By making the announcement now, the State Board of Education says it will have ample time to find a new superintendent.
