Return of an Elk herd
Officials have trumpeted the return of an elk herd to West Virginia for the first time in 141 years. From a distance, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and officials from the state Division of Natural Resources introduced 24 elk Monday in southern West Virginia. The elk are temporarily in a holding pen since arriving last week to get acclimated to their surroundings. They’ll be released by the end of this month. They were brought from the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky.
