Another School System Faces Cuts
Another school system is cutting jobs. McDowell County school administrators say 30 jobs are being eliminated next school year due to declining student enrollment and a decrease in state funding. The cuts include 15 professional positions and 15 service jobs, in the midst of a $1.5 million cut in local and state funding for schools, and necessary to balance the county’s education budget. County Board of Education personnel director Tonya White says the county has lost about 100 students per year for the past four years. Fayette County announced plans earlier this month to cut 18 school positions, while the Boone County school board will vote on a proposal to cut about 77 positions
