Gratitude is about bringing awareness to the things in our lives which we really should appreciate. Now, it’s a little too easy to go through life taking and receiving without really thinking about what it means to have all that we have in our lives.
It’s easy to overlook that many of us can see, hear, walk, talk, and taste today. It’s easy to take friends and family that we laugh with and cry with for granted. We all get just a little too busy and take for granted for thinking of the things that make our lives a little easier. Electricity, water, phones, computers and cars all are conveniences in life that we expect to be there and working!
When we start taking all the wonderful things in our lives for granted, we miss out on the gift of gratitude itself. By simply being grateful in life, we begin to view things differently. Life takes on a new meaning, and we gain a deeper understanding of all that we do have.
In hearing this, you may be thinking that there isn’t much to be thankful for. In your life you may have just lost a loved one, lost a job, had your salary cut, lost your house, lost a relationship or your health may not be good. You may be so focused on the problems you are facing and the obvious and reasonable pain that accompanies your loss that it makes being grateful too difficult. Your life has been turned upside down and you are hurting, so what is there that you could possibly be thankful for?
Yet there is something to be grateful for every day. It will be different for each person, but there is always something. Once you start making a list, you will see an amazing world in front of your eyes.
The living legend, Willie Nelson, once said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.”
So today, as we celebrate WV’s 150th Birthday, take the time today to be thankful. Thankful we live in a beautiful place with wonderful friends and people. Gratitude will change the way you look at your world.
