He called my name (3/21/12)
Mike is the morning DJ at our local radio station. He likes his job, but he loves
Recently his wife was in the car with their three-year-old granddaughter, Chloe. She
had the radio playing and turned up the volume when Mike's voice started coming over
The conversation went something like this:
"Do you hear Grandpa?"
"No. Grandpa's at work."
"Yes. Grandpa works at the radio station. Right?"
"Do you hear him on the radio?"
"No." As Chloe continued looking at the radio, she continued, "That's not Grandpa."
When Mike's wife called him and related the conversation, he decided to play a
song for his granddaughter. He chose the Veggie Tales' "Give Me Oil In My Lamp"
, "This is for my granddaughter, Chloe."
As soon as she heard her name, her eyes lit up and finally Chloe believed it was
Grandpa talking on the radio. She didn't believe until she heard him call her name.
This reminds me of the story from John 20. Jesus had died. Mary Magdalene went to
the garden with Peter and John. The stone was rolled away and the men checked out
the tomb and saw that Jesus was missing. They went back to their houses, but Mary
stood outside the tomb weeping. As she bent and peered into the tomb, she saw two
angels. When they questioned her, she told them she was looking for her Lord — and
then she stood up and turned around.
There stood Jesus, but she didn't recognize Him. Jesus asked why she was crying and
whom she was seeking. She told this man that she supposed to be a gardener, "Sir, if
You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him
Jesus response to her was very simple. "Mary!"
At the sound of her name from His lips, she knew it was Jesus. Just like Chloe, Mary
didn't believe until she heard Him call her name.
So often people don't understand this Christian "stuff." They don't believe. It
doesn't make sense to them.
But those of us who have known and accepted Christ believe. Our eyes are opened and
He has called our names. We can testify like Chloe and like Mary, "I didn't believe
until I heard Him call my name. Now I believe."
