Coal Industry

The downward trend for coal production in West Virginia is expected to continue in both the near and extended future. A new WVU study says significant declines in coal mining will continue and will also weigh heavily on the industry over the next two decades. The decline is primarily attributed to the diminishing use of coal by domestic power plants. Researchers say total coal tonnage this year could fall to its lowest, non-strike influenced level in nearly a century.
