DEP Investigates Coal Slurry Leak in Boone Couty
A coal slurry leak near Peytona in Boone County is under investigation now by the DEP. An Alpha Natural Resources affiliate has been issued a cessation order after the coal slurry leaked into Crooked Run Thursday afternoon, and WCHS TV reports crews are still working to determine how much slurry leaked. Crooked Run flows into Drawdy Creek, which then flows into the Coal River. The nearest public water system is in Lincoln County, which has an intake 17 miles downstream on the Coal River. Water intakes will be shut down as a precaution, but water supplies to customers shouldn’t be affected.
