Election Update One
With Election Coverage 2016, I’m Rich Hancock
Voters in the state of West Virginia headed to the polls today, their five electoral votes at stake in West Virginia in the race for the presidency. While West Virginia allows for early voting, the polls are still open and it’s too early to project a winner.
West Virginia, which has seen unemployment levels rise under President Obama, is expected to vote Republican for the fifth presidential election in a row.
Hillary Clinton lost the West Virginia Democratic primary in May to Sen. Bernie Sanders. Exit polls showed the highest level of economic concern in any Democratic primary this year. The state also had greater-than-usual turnout among men, whites, political independents and critics of President Obama. Republicans are hoping to ride on the coattails of an expected strong showing for Republican Donald Trump, who has promised to put coal miners back to work.
In the Past Five Presidential Elections:
West Virginia went to Republicans Mitt Romney, John McCain, George W. Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton.
