Illegal Passing of School Buses is a Huge Problem
School officials are revisiting the issue of drivers violating school bus laws as they say it continues to be a serious problem.
The Kanawha County Department of Transportation reviewed recent cases of drivers speeding in school zones and passing buses, even while children are boarding and unloading.
Supervisor of Safety for Kanawha County Schools, Jimmy Lacy, says it’s ultimately up to lawmakers to approve tougher legislation in the upcoming session that starts in two months.

With the way the law is written now, it’s hard to prosecute because the driver has to be identified. Some tickets, however, are being written using information off the license plate.
If new legislation is passed, it would make the owner of the vehicle responsible for the ticket, eliminating the need to identify the driver.
