Mailbox Theft Could Be an Issue with Settlement Checks
The water crisis settlement checks from the 2014 chemical spill are starting to hit mailboxes. More than $70 million in settlement payments are going out to water crisis victims who filed a simple claim, and with that good news comes the warning to watch out for mailbox theft. Charleston police said thieves are well aware that the checks are in the mail, and it’s a good idea to watch your mailbox and your neighbor’s too. West Virginia American Water customers will each receive about $482 with additional residents in a household getting about $157 in the nine-county area that had water supplies contaminated by the MCHM spill from Freedom Industries.
