Man Arrested After Trying to Steal a Vehicle

A man trying to steal a vehicle on Brick Lane in Cross Lanes ended up in a tense confrontation with a deputy Tuesday. Chad Lynn Hartness of Statesville, NC was approached by an officer in a patrol car, and Hartness hit the driver’s door and the Corporal got out and tried to restrain him. Hartness got into the patrol vehicle and tried to drive off in it, and eventually had to be restrained with a taser. He was arrested, charged with two felonies: attempted robbery and attempted grand larceny. He was also charged with the misdemeanor offense of battery on a police officer.
