Asst Public Defender Suspended

An established Kanawha County assistant public defender is on the sidelines for the next 30 days. John P. Sullivan won't be able to practice law during that time because he ignored an error in a client's case. The West Virginia Supreme Court suspended his license Wednesday and said another attorney has to supervise him during a two-year probation. The case in question was in 2009 - an error in a Kanawha County Circuit Court judge's sentencing order delayed Anthony White's eligibility for parole for six months. The order says Sullivan knew about the error and did nothing to fix it, and ignored calls from White and his family. The Charleston Gazette reports Sullivan will remain with the Public Defender's Office.
