Rededicated Marker
Authorities have rededicated a George Washington Memorial Granite Marker and Shield in Beckley that was buried for years and recently unearthed. Media outlets report the plaque was rededicated on Saturday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building in Beckley. The monument was one of many commemorative markers placed around the country in 1932 to celebrate the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Raleigh County Historical Society president Tom Sopher says that over the years, the Beckley plaque became buried and the elm either died or was cut down. The historic plaque was unexpectedly discovered on election day last year by a city maintenance crew.
