Rulings Expected Soon on Class-Action Suit Related to the 2014 Spill
A class-action case is pending, stemming back to the chemical spill and water crisis in 2014. Jury selection is scheduled to get underway today after some delays, and there have been reports that a settlement could happen to avoid the trial. More than 224,000 residents and more than 7,300 business owners are part of the group suing West Virginia American Water and Eastman Chemical over their roles in the 2014 spill. The Gazette Mail reports the suit claims that Eastman, which manufactured Crude MCHM and sold it to Freedom, did not properly warn about safety concerns, and alleges that Eastman knew that the Freedom site was unsafe and did nothing about it. US District Judge John Copenhaver is expected to announce decisions today about several pretrial motions.
