Supreme Court Justice Asks to Delay Impeachment
The West Virginia Supreme Court’s chief justice is asking the court to delay impeachment proceedings against her by the state Senate. Chief Justice Margaret Workman filed a petition Friday morning arguing the state Senate’s articles of impeachment are not constitutional. The Gazette-Mail reports Workman is asking to delay impeachment proceedings in the Senate until the case is resolved. She argues in the filing that the articles of impeachment violate the separation of powers in government and that her due process has been denied in the proceedings. She filed a separate motion disqualifying herself from presiding in the case. Workman is one of four current and former Supreme Court justices to be the subject of articles of impeachment that were adopted in the House of Delegates on Aug. 13.
