Historic Beckley Building to Be Torn Down
The City of Beckley is calling for the demolition of the old Beckley Newspapers building which sits empty inside the city’s downtown historic district. The Register-Herald reports that the city has submitted a demolition proposal to the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office. Mayor Bill O’Brien called the building, which had once been home to The Raleigh Register and Beckley Post-Herald, an “eyesore” and a “hazard to the public.” Preservation Office Director Susan Pierce says the 1950s building may be architecturally significant and may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
